It's a good idea to get kids accustomed to choosing foods they were
born to eat, like whole fruits and vegetables. So offer these foods
often to kids when they are very young and more receptive to trying new
things — they'll thank you for it later.
You can start the fruit-and-veggie habit with easy-to-eat choices that
require no peeling, like apples, grapes, and pears. Cut them up for
easy nibbling, and prepare them in advance to save time: Every couple
of days, cut up bowls of strawberries, melons, oranges, carrots,
celery, zucchini, peppers — or any others that your children might
like. Keep the bowls wrapped tightly in the fridge, and just pull them
out at snack time. Add some string cheese for protein and you've got an
easy, Zone-friendly, kid-loving snack. And don't forget, cut-up fruits
and veggies with a small amount of protein (such as peanut butter) make
a terrific adult snack, too.
